Wheel Switch
The switch release turns tidy man coverage into a mid-play conversation, and your wheel runner profits from every hesitation. Tell your players: 'Trade lanes fast and clean — confusion is the concept.'
How to run it
- 1
WR2 and WR3 switch at the snap: WR3 swings out and up the sideline while WR2 crosses underneath her — change lanes in the first three steps, no contact.
- 2
WR3: stay inside the sideline on your wheel — leave the QB two yards of grass to lead you into.
- 3
QB: the switch makes defenders trade or chase — if they chase, the wheel wins deep; if they trade cleanly, WR2 is slipping open across the middle.
Who the quarterback reads
- 1. Y
- 2. Z
- 3. C
The wheel is first because switched releases force the defense to sort out crossing receivers at full speed, and the wheel punishes any hesitation deep.
The concepts in this play
- Wheel
- A receiver runs to the flat, then turns and sprints upfield along the sideline — it beats defenders who jump the short throw.
- Switch
- Two stacked receivers cross as they release, swapping paths to scramble who the defense is supposed to cover.
Who should run it
Developing. Teams with a season together, or middle-school age. A couple of reps to lock the spacing in.
