5v5 flag football play
Wheel Mesh
Mesh traffic in the middle, wheel up the empty sideline — man coverage has no good answer. Tell your players: 'Crossers, you're the decoys that get chased; wheel girl, you're the payoff.'
How to run it
- 1
The mesh is the magnet: WR1 and WR2 cross at four and five yards, pulling every underneath defender toward the middle.
- 2
WR3: be patient to the flat, then turn upfield — your wheel climbs the sideline the mesh just emptied.
- 3
QB: peek the wheel first; if the flat defender stays home, one of the two crossers is exiting the traffic with a trailing defender.
Who the quarterback reads
- 1. Y
- 2. X
- 3. Z
The wheel is first because the crossing routes drag the underneath coverage inside, leaving the sideline lane open for one over-the-shoulder throw.
The concepts in this play
- Wheel
- A receiver runs to the flat, then turns and sprints upfield along the sideline — it beats defenders who jump the short throw.
Who should run it
Developing. Teams with a season together, or middle-school age. A couple of reps to lock the spacing in.
