5v5 flag football play
Wheel Rail
A switch up the right side sends the seam inside and the rail outside, stressing two defenders vertically. Tell your players: 'Rail hugs the numbers, seam takes the middle — don't drift into each other.'
How to run it
- 1
WR2's inside release is the key: she takes the outside defender up the seam and hands the sideline to the rail.
- 2
WR3: flat first, then vertical — hug the numbers, not the sideline, so the QB has room to drop it over your outside shoulder.
- 3
QB: this is a two-beat play — hit the rail as she turns up; if it's capped, WR1's drag is crossing into the middle behind it.
Who the quarterback reads
- 1. Y
- 2. X
- 3. C
The rail is first because the seam release clears its lane by design — the throw is there in rhythm or the QB moves on immediately.
The concepts in this play
- Wheel
- A receiver runs to the flat, then turns and sprints upfield along the sideline — it beats defenders who jump the short throw.
Who should run it
Developing. Teams with a season together, or middle-school age. A couple of reps to lock the spacing in.
